March 2022 update:
The City of Boston is currently reevaluating the Rutherford Avenue design to better align it with its Go Boston 2030 goal of increasing transit use citywide. We also want to create a corridor that is equipped to manage potential future growth.
About the project
We are working with the local and regional community to design a more people-friendly corridor between Sullivan Square and City Square.
Our design goals for the Rutherford Avenue / Sullivan Square Design Project are:
- An off-road community linear park with walking and biking paths between Sullivan and City Squares
- Safer and new pedestrian crossings to MBTA stations and across Rutherford Avenue
- Two general traffic lanes in each direction with additional turn lanes where necessary
- Center Running Bus Lanes connecting Everett and Cambridge
- Traffic engineering to limit cut-through traffic on Charlestown streets
- Resident Parking Permits boundaries tightened to limit spillover on local streets
- Coordination with improvements to the John J. Ryan Playground as well as new development projects
