The City of Boston's Environment Department and Parks and Recreation Department are organizing a clean-up at the Bussey Brook Meadow Urban Wild in Jamaica Plain. The cleanup will take place on: 

  • Saturday, November 10, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. 
  • 407 South Street, Jamaica Plain 02130

Volunteer sign-up

A major component of the cleanup will be the picking up and disposing of trash in the surrounding area. Another component will involve the physical removal and disposal of invasive species. 

Invasive species are a group of organisms that are not native to a specific area and are harmful to the native organisms. This is due to the competition for resources that they create among the native organisms. 

The Parks and Recreation Department will lead the education and removal of invasive species portion of the event. They will help volunteers identify and remove the invasive species that are affecting the Bussey Brook Urban Wild.

If you would like to be a part of this event, please fill out this form. If you need assistance getting to and from Bussey Brook Meadow, please note that in this form and a representative will contact you to coordinate transportation.

To get to Bussey Brook Urban Wild: 

By train: get off the train at the Forrest Hills train stop on the Orange Line. Walk out of the station towards the Arnold Arboretum. Enter Bussey Brook via Chocorua Street. Walk Chocorua Street for 11 minutes. Once you get to South Street, you should the volunteer sign. 

By car: there will be limited parking space, so please use public transportation if you are able to! Go to the address listed above and continue to drive until you see a conglomerate of cars parked and volunteers.

2019 Frog Pond Pumpkin Float

Join us Friday, October 19, at Boston Frog Pond for the 2018 Pumpkin Float.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh has announced that the annual Fall Pumpkin Float will be held at the Boston Common Frog Pond on Friday, October 19, from 5 - 8 p.m. Hundreds of illuminated jack-o’-lanterns will be floated on the water accompanied by spooky family activities.

Attendees are asked to bring eight-inch or smaller carved pumpkins that will be lit and then floated on the Frog Pond for a dramatic early evening display. In addition, attendees are invited to view creatively carved and decorated jack-o’-lanterns from various local sports teams and organizations. Adults and children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and participate in a wide range of fun activities. Children are invited to decorate luminary bags which will be displayed and illuminated along the edge of the Frog Pond. Test your courage and problem-solving skills in our haunted corn maze.

After Halloween passes, what do you plan to do with your holiday pumpkins? Instead of throwing them away, why don't you compost your pumpkins with Greenovate Boston! 

On Saturday, November 3, Greenovate Boston and City Soil will be hosting Pumpkin Smash!, a pumpkin composting event at the Mattapan Ecovation Center. Smash your pumpkins and then learn the proper way to compost them!

Did you know pumpkins past their prime can be composted with your leaf and yard waste? Join us at our family-friendly event where you can safely smash and compost your pumpkin after Halloween. Learn more about how you can compost at home, see the composting process in action, and eat cider donuts at the Mattapan Ecovation Center, 456 American Legion Highway, Mattapan, MA 02126!

Come by anytime between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Dilapidated sadface pumpkins welcomed and highly encouraged. 

RSVP for the Pumpkin Smash

It is forecasted to lightly rain on Saturday. The event will still take place if it rains. This event is a collaboration between the City's Departments of Public Works and Environment, the Mattapan Ecovation Center and City Soil, and the Boston Nature Center.

Getting to the event

By bike:

We welcome people to bike to the event!

By public transit:

From the Forest Hills T station, take the 21/31 bus to Morton Street at Canterbury Street. There is a 10-minute walk to the event. Alternatively, from Dudley Station, take the 14 bus to American Legion Hwy at Walkhill Road. This is followed by a six-minute walk.

By car:

Car parking is available at the Boston Nature Center, 500 Walk Street Hill, Mattapan, MA. It is a short walk to the Mattapan Evocation Center, 456 American legion Highway, Mattapan, MA 02126.

Can't make the event?

You can put your pumpkin out with your leaf and yard waste. Check your schedule online. Please remove all decorations from the pumpkin (paint is ok!) and place it with leaves in large paper bag or barrel labeled YARD WASTE. Pumpkins placed curbside on days without leaf and yard waste collection will be picked up and trashed.
