WHAT ARE FAIRY HOUSES?

Fairy houses are small structures for fairies and woodland creatures to live in. These whimsical habitats are build by children, families, gardeners, and nature lovers alike.

Fairy house building is a fun and creative activity for children that encourages kids to go outside and connect with the natural world, in an environmentally friendly way.

Not sure how to make a fairy house? Don't worry, members of the Mayor's Mural Crew have come up with step-by-step instructions of how to create your very own fairy house.

This free, family event will feature:
  • outdoor nature play
  • storytelling, and
  • Fairy House Building.

Children are invited to wear their favorite fairy and elf costumes to encourage their tiny guests to alight in Franklin Park. Natural materials will be provided, but everyone is  welcome to explore their surroundings to find natural elements, including sticks, stones, and leaves to adorn their fairy houses.

Schoolmaster Hill is located on Circuit Drive between the William Devine Golf Course Clubhouse and Shattuck Hospital. For more information, please call the Boston Parks and Recreation Department at 617-635-4505, or visit the Parks website.

Help us end Earth week and kick-off a summer full of action with our first Urban Wild cleanup of the year at Mattapan's Gladeside Urban Wild cleanup!

The City of Boston's Environment Department and Parks and Recreation Department are organizing a cleanup at the Gladeside Urban Wild in Mattapan.

Volunteer for the cleanup

A major component of the cleanup will be the picking up and disposing of trash in the surrounding area. Another component will involve the physical removal and disposal of invasive species.

Invasive species are a group of organisms that are not native to a specific area and are harmful to the native organisms. This is due to the competition for resources that they create among the native organisms.

The Parks and Recreation Department will lead the education and removal of invasive species portion of the event. They will help volunteers identify and remove the invasive species that are affecting the Gladeside Urban Wild.

Please remember to bring:
  1. Water
  2. Jacket
  3. A hat
  4. Sunglasses
  5. Bug spray
  6. Close-toed shoes
  7. Pants or sweatpants
  8. Tools and gloves, if you have them

Please also check the weather before the event. You can learn more about Urban Wilds online. We also have information on the Mattapan Urban Wilds.

If you have any questions, please email Greenovate Boston at greenovate@boston.gov.
