Firsts from the women of the City Council

There has been at least one woman on the Boston City Council for the past 41 years, since 1974. The current makeup of the Council includes the most women ever in history! In honor of Women’s History Month, here are some firsts being represented by the current women of the City Council.

  • Andrea J. Campbell is the first Black woman to serve as Council President.
  • Annissa Essaibi-George is the first to paint her office "hot lips" pink and fill it with an all-woman staff.
  • Ayanna Pressley was the first Black woman elected to the City Council.
  • Ayanna Pressley is the first woman in 30 years to top the ticket.
  • Kim Janey is the first woman Councilor of District 7.
  • Lydia Edwards is the first woman Councilor of color of District 1.
  • Michelle Wu is the first Asian-American woman elected to the City Council and the first woman of color to serve as Council President.
  • Michelle Wu is the first woman to give birth while serving on the Council.
