Redistricting Information
What is Redistricting?
Redistricting is the process of drawing lines of districts from which public officials are elected. In the City of Boston, District City Councilors represent our 9 districts.
Districts are reviewed every 10 years, following the release of Census data to ensure that districts reflect changes in population and diversity.
How does redistricting work?
Using Census data, the Committee on Redistricting will review Council districts. Districts are reviewed using precincts as the smallest unit. The committee will look at different criteria to ensure maps are fair including:
- Equal population
- Compact districts
- Contiguous boundaries
- Preservation of neighborhoods and communities
