Open Newbury Street

Newbury Street is a mile-long, eight block stretch of shops, salons, galleries and restaurants. This famous Boston street becomes a pedestrian-only walkway on Sundays in the summer. The street is closed to vehicles to allow pedestrians the opportunity to use the full width of the street, from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue.

History of Open Newbury Street

The City of Boston first piloted Open Newbury Street in 2016. Thousands of people enjoyed food, shopping and dining in the street on one Sunday in August. To build on the success of the first event, we expanded Open Newbury Street to three Sundays a year in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Open Newbury Street returned for three Sundays in 2021 after a one-year hiatus. The event was held for six consecutive Sundays in late August and September in 2022. Last year, Open Newbury Street returned for it’s longest season to date, as it was expanded to sixteen consecutive Sundays in 2023.
