Cabo Verdean Women's Day

The Women's Organization of Cape Verde (OMCV) was founded in 1981, and in 1983, they proposed the day of March 27th to be Kriola’s International Day or International Cabo Verdean Women’s Day.

March 27th was proposed by the OMCV in 1983 to be recognized as Kriola’s International Day or International Cabo Verdean Women’s Day, in honor of the official founding date of the OMCV and its significant contributions to advancing women's rights and gender equality in Cape Verde.

Massachusetts is home to the largest population of Cabo Verdeans with a citizenship of 70,000 across the state and over 13,000 in Boston. Cabo Verdean women have played a vital role in the development and progress of our city, bringing with them their rich cultural heritage, resilience, and commitment to community.

The Council is committed to promoting gender equity, recognizing the contributions of all women, creating an inclusive community that celebrates diversity and values all its residents, and streamlines paths for success for all residents including Cabo Verdean women to ensure the growth of each Bostonian.

This week, the Council adopted a resolution to name March 27th as Cabo Verdean Women’s Day or Kriola’s International Day.
