Boston Public Library's Concerts int he Courtyard continue in August

Boston Public Library’s Concerts in the Courtyard continue through August 29, welcoming visitors to experience the music of local and international artists in a variety of genres at the Central Library in Copley Square, located at 700 Boylston Street. In addition to Friday lunchtime concerts at 12:30 p.m., this season the library now offers evening concerts on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. All the concerts are free and last approximately one hour.

August concerts showcase contemporary and traditional jazz, indie folk, opera, and more:

  • Properly Unprepared, Friday, August 1, 12:30 p.m. The young, five-piece jazz combo plays classics by artists such as Miles Davis along with more contemporary jazz.
  • Darlingside, Wednesday, August 6, 6 p.m. Darlingside is a Massachusetts-based indie folk quartet. Their tightly arranged tunes draw from the unexpected, featuring strains of bluegrass, classical, and barbershop.
  • Boston Lyric Opera, Friday, August 8, 12:30 p.m. Boston Lyric Opera presents a concert featuring highlights from its current season, including La TraviataDon Giovani, and works by Rossini and Johann Strauss.
  • Caitlin Canty, Wednesday, August 13, 6 p.m. Singer-songwriter Caitlin Canty performs her soulful songs with an old Recording King guitar and her husky alto.
  • The Jason Palmer Quartet, Friday, August 15, 12:30 p.m. The Jason Palmer Quartet mixes modern-improvisational music with traditional jazz.
  • Fernando Holz Band, Wednesday, August 20, 6 p.m. The Fernando Holz Band is comprised of veterans of the Boston jazz and world music scene and features keyboards and piano, trombone, drums, bass, and vocals.
  • Bill Lowe, Friday, August 22, 12:30 p.m. Bass trombonist and tubaist Bill Lowe’s career in the music industry includes more than thirty years as a performer, composer, producer, and educator.
  • The Ron Murphy Band, Wednesday, August 27, 6 p.m. The Ron Murphy Band draws from a repertory of tunes by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Joe Williams, and Billy Eckstine.
  • American Century Music, Friday, August 29, 12:30 p.m. Making their fifth annual appearance in the Courtyard Series, American Century Music will perform a program featuring Charles Ives' String Quartet No. 1.

The Concerts in the Courtyard schedule, which is generously sponsored by the Boston Public Library Foundation (www.bplf.com), can be viewed at www.bpl.org/concerts. If there is inclement weather, concerts will be moved to the Commonwealth Salon.
