Hear the story of how river and parkland were reclaimed and how the vision of Frederick Law Olmsted is being restored for the 21st century.

Meet at REI, Landmark Center, 401 Park Drive, Boston, MA 02215. The event is free and open to the public. Bring a refillable water bottle and wear comfortable walking shoes.

The first tour starts at 12 p.m. (noon), and the last tour at 3 p.m. The historic tour covers 385 years of the history of Castle Island and its eight forts.

The park design incorporates historic seawalls dating from 1870, and has superb views of downtown Boston.

The event will include the reading of the names of Bay State service members who have died as a result of active duty post-Sept, 11, 2001.

The reading will take place among a flag garden with 37,000 miniature American flags honoring the sacrifices of all fallen Massachusetts service men and women dating back to the Revolutionary War. Flags will be in place from Thursday through sundown on Monday, May 28.

The nonprofit is dedicated to the families of military service personnel from Massachusetts who have died in service to the United States.

A National Park Service Ranger, along with Frederick Law Olmsted (as portrayed by Gerry Wright) will examine the natural and cultural history of the pond, and look at Olmsted's plans for this popular park.

All ferry rides from Boston will be free to Spectacle and Georges islands. This is a first-come, first-served event.
