About Los Hacheros

This Puerto Rican and Cuban influenced band is reviving Latin folkloric styles like son montuno, guaracha, and salsa by combining them with the fiery rhythms of bomba. Though only consisting of 6-musicians, this conjunto makes up for size with their explosive enthusiasm. They are widely known for their improvisation that keeps audiences on their toes.

About Jesús Pagán y Conjunto Barrio

Led by local star, Jesús Pagán, this nine-man band has played at some of the best Latin and Jazz Festivals in the world for nearly a decade. Performing a myriad of Latin styles, including salsa, jazz, merengue, bomba, cumbia, and more, their music has landed them on Top Ten Latin Song lists and earned them 3 award-mentions in the 2014 Latin Grammys.

About Zayra Pola

Dubbed “La reina del timbal” (the Queen of timbales) in Puerto Rico, Zayra Pola’s rhythmic beats and melodious voice puts a spell over the audience, so you won’t be able to resist dancing for her entire performance! A Berklee College graduate, Pola has performed with musical legends such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Cheo Feliciano, Grammy-winner Eguie Castrillo, and Grammy-winner Bill Whelan.

About Eric Germán y su Orquesta

A well-known timbalero across the Massachusetts festival scene, Eric Germán and his 12-piece orchestra bring audiences to their feet with their high energy and swinging Salsa music. A prodigious musician, Germán has been performing since age 10 with renowned artists such as Cheo Feliciano, Andy Montañez, Ismael Miranda, and Tony Vega. In 2017, he’s slated to release his debut solo album.

Wake Up The Earth Festival - now May 13

The annual Wake Up the Earth Festival (WUTE) is postponed to May 13 (rain date).

The Wake Up the Earth Festival began in 1979 when a group of local neighbors and activists banded together to stop the Interstate 95 expansion into Jamaica Plain. The festival began as, and still is, a celebration of what can be accomplished when people of all traditions, cultures, ages, and beliefs come together.
The annual Wake Up the Earth Festival (WUTE) takes place each year on the first Saturday in May and is currently attended by well over 10,000 individuals of all ages. The event features four stages that include:

  • music and dance performances
  • popular theater
  • the Youth Stage, and
  • story telling for all ages.

In addition to performances, WUTE features over more than 50 craft, non-profit, and food vendors. The festival is anchored by a massive parade (with branches that start in JP Center and Roxbury) with several thousand people marching. A great many individuals, local artists, community groups, and schools join forces every year to create this unique community collaboration.
